Behind the Scenes - Emily Hart Photography

Hi friends! I’m excited to share this behind-the-scenes peek at how we shoot a space.

Our lovely friend Natalie Cartwright followed us along on set to capture the process. I’ll walk you through some details here so you can see what all the fun is about! Let’s dive into setting up the scene, getting the right angles and details and just a little about my editing workflow. Read on!

First up- let’s set the scene. I like to begin with finding just the right angle to show off the space. Lighting, lines and placement all come into play here. It’s a delicate balance between all of those, and I love it when the angles just hit “right.” Sometimes I feel like I shoot from pure instinct (I’ll know it when I see it!) but it helps to take composition rules and architectural lines into account for each shot.

Next up is, in my opinion, the most important part. Details! Every design is different, but each one has something in common– the details make the design. My second order of business for each shot is to make sure the details are on point. No flower, book, or pillow left behind!

Once we’ve got our angles, details and lighting perfect, the shot happens. But, my friends, that’s only the beginning! Each shot brings with it the long editing process. (I’d need many many more posts to even scratch the surface!) But, as a quick overview, my workflow looks a little something like this:

  1. Lightroom- I start the culling process in Adobe Lightroom. This includes flagging the best images, doing basic lighting edits then importing into Photoshop for more detailed edits.

  2. Photoshop- I’d say 50% of the process takes place here. From removing distractions, to straightening angles, to perfecting lighting– this is where the magic happens.

  3. Back to Lightroom- Once everything is perfected in Photoshop, it’s back to Lightroom to add the finishing touches and export for the client.
